Special to the News
State Forester Rick Oats and Coosa Management Specialist Brad Dunham attended a meeting of the Flagg Mountain Chapter of the Alabama Hiking Trail Society to announce some changes that are being made regarding the future of Coosa County’s Flagg Mountain.
First, they announced that as of June 17 there will be a full-time Alabama Forestry Commission employee stationed on the mountain as the caretaker. The identity will be announced later, but it is someone with a background as a caretaker and in outdoor recreation.
The Rangers Cabin will be converted back into the living quarters for the caretaker, and an office will be built for the Forestry Commission. All reservations for the cabins will be handled by the commission, and more information on that will be coming soon.
As of May 31, the cabin area of Flagg Mountain will be closed while forestry does some work in the area. It will reopen on June 17.
The tower area will be accessible via the new parking lot and sidewalk, and the tower will be open Friday-Sunday each week.
In another announcement, Kimm and Nathan Wright reported that Flagg Mountain had been recognized in a local poll on Radio Alabama as the Best Outdoor Recreation Facility in the Coosa Valley Area.
Watch for further announcements coming soon regarding the upgrades to Flagg Mountain. The Weogufka State Forest is owned by the Alabama Forestry Commission, and they thank the Alabama Hiking Trail Society for their continued participation as the mountain will now be operated by the AFC, as well.
