Competing against 284 teams across central Alabama, a Central High School team placed number one in the Alabama Stock Market Game for the second year in a row.
Central High School senior economics students have been receiving a scholarship to participate in the Alabama Stock Market Game for more than a decade, and although we have had teams place in the Top 10 before, we are very excited that for two years in a row we have had the first place team in the southern region.
Teams are given a fictitious $100,000 to invest in stocks, bonds and mutual funds over an 8-week period. Central’s economics teacher does not give the students many instructions other than to watch the news and apply what they learned about supply and demand, particularly non-price determinants like trends, which young people are really good at picking up on early.
The portfolio of the winning team made up of Quin Gilbert, Chacara Long and Damarkus Sandlin showed they did exactly what they were instructed to do. Their portfolio included tech stocks such as Apple and Google, but the holding that earned them the largest gain was the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Congratulations to our first place winners, each of whom received a $50 check from the Alabama Stock Market Game.
