In My Humble Opinion
Jodi McDade
Sorry I missed last week’s newspaper, but I was at Dauphin Island celebrating Thor Wilson’s birthday! His parents, Ran and Terry, always plan a great party for him, and this year was no different.
We had a hodge podge of others joining us so we spent time with both old and new friends. Thor’s guests were my Harley and ChiaPet from Birmingham (a girl!). Banding birds, walks, a boat ride to drag for fish/shrimp and see dolphins, great seafood, and time at the beach were all included!
We were basically on a news blackout, so it was hard to keep up with what was going on in the world. I was glad to keep hearing about arrests in the terrible shootings in Dadeville. It’s just so hard to understand why these young people are so violent. The four lives lost were young people who had great futures ahead of them, and now those arrested will hopefully spend the rest of their lives in prison. So very sad.
The world is still turning upside down, and Monday was a whirlwind for those of us on the conservative side of politics and news. Fox News fired Tucker Carlson – after letting Dan Bongino go the week before. I understand Fox has now lost a huge amount of money with many people (including me) changing channels and vowing not to return. It’s a real challenge to find a new network when you have been so attached to the correspondents on one for years. But we will just wait and see if some other news sources pop up.
This is springtime, and many community activities are popping up almost every weekend. Get out and enjoy our beautiful county. Mule Day in Weogufka and a food/clothing give away at Rockford Baptist Church are on the calendar for tomorrow. Flagg Mountain is always a great place to enjoy the outdoors.
If you are interested in canoeing or kayaking, get in touch with Sheldon Hutcherson about a new group in Coosa County that is a chapter of the Alabama Scenic River Trails. They are going to work on improving access and signage for Hatchet Creek as their first project.
In national news there is never a dull moment. The 2024 election is gearing up, and we have now heard that the current president is indeed going to run for reelection. Even most Democrats are not behind this, but who do they really have to step in? I do expect several people to announce they will run before the end of the summer.
On the Republican side, there are quite a few that are exploring the possibility of running against the former president. In my opinion several of them would make a good choice to lead this country and get us out of the messes we are in now.
While I agree with most of the policies of the previous administration, I would like to see someone more diplomatic and presidential to administer those policies. My main issues are illegal immigration (enforce our laws), education (dismantle the U.S. Department of Education) and strengthen our military (get wokeness out).
We need to return to a free enterprise economy and get the government out of all the areas it has no authority to be in. We should be a self-sustaining country instead of being dependent on our enemies for our goods – oil, pharmaceuticals, steel, batteries, communications, food, etc.
We used to be the SUPPLIER; now we are the SUPPLIED. With the switch of one button by the Chinese government we could be back in the 19th century with almost no notice. What would you do? These are things that we all need to realize our government has regulated us into dependency and high costs – and I’m including both the right and left in the blame.
I remember when we could all disagree, but at least sit down and talk to each other. We could find some common ground where we could work together to get things accomplished. There used to be the far left, the far right and then a much larger middle of the road. Now that middle-of-the-road, rational and open-minded group is gone.
I feel like I’m living in a science fiction movie with a bunch of crazy people in charge. Somehow, we have got to get a grip on things and bring law and order back to the forefront before an actual civil war breaks out between good and evil.
Well, I’m ready to see what this next week will bring. I’ve got my popcorn and cold drink ready! Until then – have a great week!
