Dear Editor,
As I drove through the Rockford Cemetery, these miniature flags stood out against the old weathered monuments of long ago. Thanks to the ones or group responsible for this historic gesture.
But there is one grave that 99.9 percent of the people in Rockford have never seen. It also has a flag – let us not forget Washington L. Smith. He is buried behind the Rockford Methodist Church in a graveyard consisting of only four graves.
He was born on June 16, 1837, and died on January 25, 1891. He was a Methodist Episcopal minister and was clerk of the Circuit Court from 1874 till his death in 1891. According to “Brewer’s History of Coosa County,” “He was a good man and a good officer.” His monument also tells us he was a Mason.
Sincerely,
J. T. McDonald
Rockford, Ala.
