A Kellyton man was arrested earlier this month on multiple charges following a call to the Sheriff’s Office from a concerned citizen.
Sheriff Michael Howell reported that on March 10, Deputy Scott and Reserve Deputy Davis were dispatched to the Kellyton area regarding two small children playing in the roadway.
Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement officers made contact with Samuel Smoot who was reportedly very irate, standing in the roadway screaming at deputies and using profanities. Because of children being involved in the incident, the Coosa County Department of Human Resources was also contacted and responded.
Deputies continued trying to calm Smoot down, but he reportedly remained irate, using profanities and yelling, causing a disturbance within the Kellyton town limits.
Howell stated that Smoot also snatched one of the children by the arm, resulting in injury to that child’s arm.
Additionally, while the deputies were there Smoot picked up a firearm and took it inside the residence. During the course of the investigation, deputies discovered that it was a 12-gauge shotgun that was reported stolen out of another agency, according to Howell.
Ultimately, Smoot, 38 years old of Kellyton, was arrested and charged with second-degree receiving stolen property, third-degree domestic violence and disorderly conduct.
Howell confirmed that the children involved were in Smoot’s care at the time.
Smoot’s total bond for all three charges was set at $9,500. He was released on bond on March 16 to await trial.
