On February 25, Republican Party State Executive Committee members from Coosa County attended the 2023 Winter Business Meeting of the Alabama Republican Party in Birmingham.
The main purpose of the meeting was to participate in the election of the chairman and other officers of the ALGOP and to conduct other business of the party.
During the election of state officers John Wahl was reelected as chairman by acclamation; Joan Reynolds was elected vice chairman; Carol Jahns and Sallie Bryant were reelected by acclamation as secretary and treasurer, respectively; and Renee Powers was elected as the district chairman for districts 3, 6 and 7. Bill Harris was elected as the district chairman for districts 1 and 2.
To begin the day, Sheriff Michael Howell, Judge of Probate Richard Dean, County commissioners John Forbus and Lamar Daugherty, and Jodi McDade were able to attend a meeting of the State Executive Committee members from the counties included in the 3rd Congressional District. Coosa County was redistricted from the 6th Congressional District into the 3rd District during the last election, and this was the first time attending as part of that district.
The additional purpose of the bi-annual business meetings (winter and summer) is to receive updates and information from the state and national committees, but to also address proposed bylaw amendments and resolutions that have been submitted by members.
Six bylaw amendments were submitted with five being approved and one being withdrawn. Three resolutions were submitted and were approved.
There was also an amendment to a standing rule related to denying ballot access that was put forth for discussion and vote. This amendment strengthens the ability to deny ballot access to any person who “participated in the primary election of another political party, publicly supported a nominee of another political party or an independent candidate, financially contributed to a candidate of another political party or an independent candidate, or was a member or officer of a club that is strictly aligned with another political party.”
This also relates to any individual seeking a recommendation for an appointment to the governor or other appointing official. It also puts additional responsibilities on the vetting of prospective candidates by each county party and the state party candidate committees. The amendment was approved.
The Summer Meeting of the State Executive Committee will be held on Saturday, August 5, in Montgomery.
