Special to the News
Coosa Upward was started in March of 2022 to bring a county-wide, year-round, youth sports experience to the youth of Coosa County.
One year later, with three sports seasons under their belt, 141 participants have had the opportunity to play youth sports right here in Coosa County. The program is unique in that it aims to provide athletic, spiritual, mental, and social growth to its participants while functioning as an all-volunteer organization within the county.
The league is hosted by the Weogufka Family Worship Center, but is supported through a partnership with multiple Coosa County churches who serve as Game Day Host churches, including Concord Baptist Church, Equality Methodist, Hatchett Springs Worship Center, New Home Baptist Church, Peace and Goodwill, and Sardis Baptist Church.
Registration costs are kept low for participants thanks to generous contributions from the community including Bronze level sponsors Roger Wilder, the Hyatt family, the Castleberry family, Cheryl Alverson, Wayne Ward at Central AL Fire Protection, Phillip and Paige Alverson, First Bank, Joey and Anita Moore, Scott White at Infinity Real Estate, and Dennis Sanford.
Silver level sponsors include Coosa County Family Dentistry, Accordia Health, Empowered to Conquer, the Town of Rockford, Tommy and Nancy Thornton, and Concord Baptist Church.
Gold level sponsors include Kellyton Fire Department under Chief Jerry Sewell, Nelson Electric under John Forbus and Valley View Church of God.
Platinum level sponsors include the Weogufka Family Worship Center and New Providence Baptist Church.
Thank you to the Weogufka Family Worship Center for hosting our end-of-season banquet for 120 football and cheer participants, their families and volunteers.
We recognized our volunteer coaches for this season, Brandon Davis, Donna Calhoun, Chris Crumbley, Jania Kelly, Austin Robinson, Brandon Voss, and Maressa Ware, as well as our student athlete assistant coach volunteers Dylan Calhoun, Marcus Castleberry, Serenity Goolsby, Ethan Moore, Eden Nickolson, John Richardson, and Sidney Thornton.
Our volunteer referees this season were Shundell Russaw, Angel Cooper, Aaron Hamilton, Elijah Richardson, and Alex Williams.
Thank you to the Town of Rockford and the Coosa County schools for providing practice and game facilities for the league. Lastly, thank you to Lynn Castleberry who serves as our social media coordinator and game day concession manager for the league.
