Today’s Scripture: Luke 22:60-62
Practical Application: Confusion leads to failure.
Action Statement: Today, I will make sure I am converted (22:32)!
BAD EXAMPLE: Peter showed himself to be impulsive, outspoken, bold, enthusiastic, and energetic. Yet, he often acted with little understanding, which led to confusion and unfortunate action.
OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN FROM THE MASTER: “For about three and a half years Jesus had traveled from one end of Palestine to the other, telling people about God and His love for them” (“Adventures Through the Bible,” Ivy M. Moody, pg. 66). During that time He performed many miracles which Peter and the other apostles witnessed, and should have learned from.
JESUS’ CONCERN FOR PETER: Although Peter made many mistakes, he energetically worked for his master. Satan, knowing this, wanted him on his team (Luke 22:31), and Jesus was greatly concerned for His pupil (Luke 22:32). He had so much to learn and so much to overcome! So much so that Jesus used the phrase “when thou art converted”! Did he not follow Jesus willingly? Yes! Was he not ready to go to prison and even to death with Him? He thought so, and even said so (Luke 22:33)!
JESUS’ PREDICTION AND ITS FULFILLMENT: “And he said, I tell thee Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.” (Luke 22:34)! In his doubt and confusion Satan began sifting him (v. 31), and he began spiraling downward.
When Jesus was arrested “…Peter followed afar off,” (Luke 22:54) instead of being with Him as he had declared. When identified by a maiden as being a follower of Christ, the unbelievable – at least to Peter – happened. “I know not what thou sayest” (Matt. 26:70); “And he denied him, saying Woman, I know him not (Luke 22:57).”
Satan, knowing his weakness and failure, attacked again without delay. “And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, this fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man” (Matt. 27:71-72); “After a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not” (Luke 22:58).
After about an hour he is once again identified, “Then began he to curse and swear, saying, I know not the man” (Matt. 26:74); “And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest” (Luke 22:60).
JESUS’ LOOK AND PETER’S WEEPING: “And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. And the Lord turned and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord… And Peter went out and wept bitterly” (Luke 22:60-62).
He finally learned! He was finally converted! He escaped Satan’s grasp and became the great servant Jesus expected him to be! May each of us do the same!
