Most of the Psalms were written by King David as inspired by the Spirit of God.
David was the king who succeeded Israel’s first king, who was rebellious and eventually sought a witch to assist him when he couldn’t hear from God.
David started out the Psalms this way in Psalm 1:1, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly…”
To those who know Jesus Christ, we don’t have to look any further than the Word of God (Jesus) for counsel.
The Word of God covers the whole gamut of instruction. In other words, we can find the answers we need in the pages of the Holy Writ.
The Psalm calls a man blessed when he doesn’t follow ungodly counsel and his delight is in the law of the Lord. That man meditates in God’s law, or God’s Word, day and night.
He follows Godly instruction.
One of Jesus’ names is actually “Counselor.”
It is amazing that we can go to the Word of God in every situation and find the right path.
Some perhaps feel the Bible is antiquated concerning the times. But the Word of God covers the beginning of time to the end of time and into eternity. It never gets old. Jesus is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
In fact, the Bible reveals some events that have yet to occur in time. As time marches on, those prophecy fulfillments are becoming fewer, and it appears by the signs of the times declared by the Bible that we could indeed be living in the last of the last days, so to speak.
The Word of God is always relevant. It states there is “nothing new under the sun.”
At the same time, we are experiencing “knowledge being increased and people running to and fro” in busy mode.
Additionally, ungodly counsel is rapidly increasing through numerous platforms. We’re living in the information age, and there is so much out there. People are laying hold on information and counsel that is ungodly and harmful to them.
It comes through entertainment, social media, peers, colleagues and so many other sources. Many times, we go to other sources, while the Bible collects dust on the shelf.
Then, we wonder why things go awry in our lives, communities and nations.
Israel was the same way. They had the statutes straight from God, but many times chose to ignore them and follow what others were doing.
It eventually led to their captivity.
Josiah, a king of Judah who began seeking God following times of disobedience, rid the nation of idol worship. God then led Josiah to make repairs to the temple of God. In doing so, they found a copy of the book of the law in the house of the Lord.
It wasn’t by coincidence they discovered the book – God led them to it because He knew they were seeking after Him.
When Josiah was informed the book of the law had been found, he immediately looked it over. Josiah then understood they were not following God’s counsel and instruction the way they were supposed to. It grieved him in the sense they hadn’t followed it, but now they had come to the point that God revealed it to them, and they could now keep the counsel.
The king then had the law read to everyone, and the people made a covenant to follow its counsel.
When they departed from God’s counsel and didn’t even know what the law said, they experienced tough times. But adherence to God’s counsel that was returned brought success to their lives.
