The Alabama Department of Public Health is promoting rabies awareness following a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report on a national increase in rabies exposures and the appropriate use of rabies biologics after potential exposures.
Like many states, Alabama has seen more rabies cases involving domestic animals, including dogs and cats. Rabies also continues to occur in wildlife, including raccoons, foxes and bats.
“Rabies is not a new or emerging disease, but because human cases are rare, the risk can sometimes be underestimated,” said Dee W. Jones, DVM, State Public Health veterinarian. “The virus itself is not changing. When domestic animals become infected, it is generally because they are not properly vaccinated. The increase in rabies cases involving dogs and cats is directly related to animals not being kept current on their rabies vaccinations. Recognizing a potential exposure and responding appropriately remain critical to preventing this fatal disease.”
Bats require particular caution when found inside homes, college dormitories, nursing homes, or other living quarters. People who were sleeping or cannot reliably determine whether contact occurred may need evaluation for potential rabies exposure.
“When bats are found in living quarters, a single bat can potentially result in multiple people needing to be evaluated,” Jones said. “Whenever possible, the bat should be safely captured and secured rather than released outside.”
Never handle bats or other wildlife with bare hands. Avoid contact with wildlife, especially animals behaving abnormally, and teach children to immediately report any bite, scratch, or other contact with a wild or unfamiliar animal.
Vaccinating domestic animals remains one of the most important barriers between rabies in wildlife and people. Pet owners should keep dogs, cats and ferrets current on rabies vaccination and consult a veterinarian about vaccinating other animals that may encounter wildlife.
Anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the area thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical attention.
