On campus senior economics students visited the kindergarten classes to share a lesson on saving money for their senior year.
They read the book “A Chair for My Mother,” about a little girl who saved her change in a jar and then took it to the bank so she could buy her mom a new chair.
The seniors showed the kindergartners all the things seniors need or want such as their cap and gown, prom dress or suit, yearbook, letterman jacket, senior portraits, class ring, etc.
Thanks to the Literacy Everywhere! grant directed by Meg Masters, the seniors were able to give each kindergartner a copy of the book, “A Chair for My Mother,” as well as a jar they could use to save their money for all the things they will need or want for their senior year. The jar also had a sticker attached showing the average prices of the different “senior” items.
Lastly, Alabama One credit union in Rockford and Goodwater provided a flyer with a QR code so parents can open a Little Ones savings account for their child to take their jar of change to the bank, just like the little girl in the book, but to save up for their senior year.
The seniors are looking forward to walking their kindergarten friends to their graduation ceremony Monday, May 18.
