The Heart of Alabama Food Bank, which serves Coosa and 11 other counties, is holding a Coosa County Food & Fund Drive next Friday.
The food drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, February 7, at Piggly Wiggly in Goodwater, located at 470 South Main Street. All food collected at this drive is to remain in Coosa County to serve food-insecure neighbors.
Based in Montgomery, the Heart of Alabama Food Bank, or HAFB, will host the Coosa County Food & Fund Drive to support local food pantries in the area.
According to Amy Dennis, community engagement coordinator with HAFB, this is an effort to “support and connect with the local pantries and communities that the Heart of Alabama Food Bank serves across Alabama.”
The HAFB encourages community members to participate in the food drive by dropping off non-perishable food items at the Goodwater Piggly Wiggly next Friday.
While HAFB appreciates all types of non-perishable food donations, the organization has the most requests from its partner agencies for particular items.
Some of the most needed items include macaroni and cheese or easy mac, pudding cups, microwave meals, pop-top can meals such as Chef Boyardee, fruit cups, canned fruit, pasta, rice, beans, canned vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, apple sauce, canned tuna, canned chicken, oatmeal or grits, individual cereal boxes, granola or fruit bars, instant potatoes, and canned soup.
The HAFB requests that individuals do not donate items that have been opened, and the organization does not accept glass containers. Additionally, all food donations should include complete ingredient information.
For individuals who are interested in donating but are unable to drop off a food item on February 7, monetary donations can be made for the Coosa County Fund Drive online at https://givebutter.com/CoosaCounty.
The Heart of Alabama Food Bank, formerly the Montgomery Area Food Bank, was established in 1986. The organization became a certified affiliate of Feeding America in 1989 and works with the state association, Feeding Alabama.
The mission of HAFB is to source, acquire and distribute nutritious food to those experiencing hunger and food insecurity throughout the region so that families, seniors and children can thrive.
Last year, HAFB distributed 30 million pounds of food, or 25 million meals, to the 35 counties served through it and its affiliated food banks and is reportedly on track to distribute even more in the coming years.
HAFB provides food to its service area by by working with more than 200 partner agencies that serve people through various programs. For more information, visit www.hafb.org.
