Jarrod Washington is the automotive instructor at the Coosa County Science and Technology Center which includes courses in transportation, distribution and logistics, general automotive, and power and equipment for ninth through twelfth grade students. This is Mr. Washington’s second year teaching, as well as his second year at Central.
When asked about his teaching philosophy Mr. Washington said he wants his students to understand how the workplace operates, what to expect when they leave the program and to have the confidence that they are ready for work on day one; whether it is in a career, the military, or college.
It is also important to Mr. Washington that his program provides opportunities for his students that they may not have otherwise. He wants his program to set a new standard for the state of Alabama that others will follow. The greatest honor will be for our students to be able to look back and say, “I was a part of this and helped start and establish that standard and level of success!” Mr. Washington is already hearing from former students who are already finding success early in their career!
Mr. Washington loves watching his students gain confidence in their abilities. He says, “I love seeing their faces light up when they place at competitions; they are capable of so much more than they know!”
Being able to observe this and their development day in and day out is a joy.
In addition to his regular classroom instruction, Mr. Washington currently tutors classroom curriculum, supervises shop work and is helping to prepare students for the upcoming SkillsUSA competitions two nights a week after school, whether in person or virtually.
Mr. Washington says he looks at his students as his own children and wants nothing but the best for them and their future. He tells them often, “I don’t want you to struggle like I have! When I started my career in the automotive industry, I had to sweep and mop floors and pull vehicles in and out in the service lane.”
Mr. Washington encourages his students to learn what they can now, earn any certifications available and to be their best self. He believes, “There’s absolutely no need for any of our students to start off in the basement struggling like I had to!”
Congratulations, Mr. Washington, and thank you for going above and beyond to provide our students with opportunities to succeed.
