The 2024 Lake Mitchell Home Owners and Boat Owners, or HOBO, Poker Run was a huge success.
Everyone involved, including players and volunteers, had a great time. There were more than 450 participants who helped Lake Mitchell HOBO raise more than $12,000.
The funds raised are used to support education in Coosa and Chilton counties.
In May, a $4,000 scholarship was awarded to Sidney Thornton. She is a graduate of Central High School Coosa County and is attending the University of South Alabama in Mobile majoring in radiation therapy.
In October, more than $6,000 was awarded in grant money to teachers in Coosa and Chilton counties. These grants will benefit more than 2,500 students during the 2024-2025 school year with ongoing benefits for many years to come.
Grant recipients in Coosa County are Central High School teachers Jacques Mitchell for “Growing a Garden: Part 2,” Alicia Thompson for “Incline Plane Sets” and Mary White for “Chemical Reaction Kits;” and Coosa County Career Tech Center’s Keslie Garrett and Hester Hamby for “Chew and Chat Project.”
Recipients in Chilton County are Thorby High School’s Rachel Fine with “Enhancing Math Through Classroom Tools” and Bridget Canton for a 3-D printer; Clanton Intermediate School’s Aimee Dobbs for “Library/Media Book Series,” Sarah Coburn for “Hatching Chicks and Ducklings” and Denise Wright for a gaga ball pit; Jemison Elementary School’s Macey Gentry for “Toniebox Listening Center” and Haley Davis sensory equipment for special education; Verbena High School’s BethAnn Pope for Edison robots and Shelia Speaks for swing seat replacements; Clanton Middle School’s Kelly Rozelle for “Science Library;” and Lecroy Career Tech Center’s Amber Price for “Cosmetology Runway Project.”
The Lake Mitchell HOBO thanks all those who participated, volunteered, donated, or helped in any way as it continues its endeavor to promote education in Coosa and Chilton counties.
