Holidays sneaked up on us

Food for Thought
Judge of Probate Richard Dean
My goodness, Christmas is just around the corner and the new year is fast approaching. I am normally very excited about the holidays that come at this time of year. However, this year for some reason it has been difficult for me to get in the holiday spirit.
The holidays seemed to “just be upon us.” I have mentioned that feeling to people I’ve seen in the courthouse. Everyone, without exception, says they feel the same way. They can’t believe we are in December and will be greeting the new year in a matter of days.
I have seen a few houses with Christmas decorations; some where the people really went all out with the decorations. I really appreciate their efforts, especially since Jackie and I did not get to put up the decorations to the extent we normally do.
Christmas always brings out the best and the worst in people. The best is that many people seem to care a little more for their fellow man. We see more people volunteering to work in shelters, at food banks and support other community projects aimed at helping those who may not be as blessed. We see many people being especially generous by making monetary contributions to assist their neighbors.
Many of our churches have special programs. Some aimed at helping people. Some telling the story of Jesus’ birth. Some churches have Christmas Eve programs to remind us the true reason for the season.
I always especially enjoy Christmas Eve services with my family and friends. It gives me a warm feeling inside and time to reflect on how truly blessed I am that God has grace and mercy.
Sadly, however, the worst can also be seen in the selfishness some display. It is more about the receiving than the giving. We see fights where people are trying to get a deal on an item or want that last sale item that is on the shelf. On our televisions, we have witnessed adults (being an adult doesn’t necessarily mean maturity, it simply means fully grown) acting very immaturely to say the least. But, even with those displays of meanness, I believe more people than not actually display their best. After all, we are fortunate to live in the South. And we know people in the South are known for their hospitality and friendly nature.
All of Coosa County’s towns had some type Christmas celebration. Goodwater had its Christmas parade. Kellyton had its Christmas Celebration. Rockford had its Winter Fest and parade. I greatly appreciate our city/towns making the efforts to provide family-focused functions where our families and friends can come together and enjoy being together.
These events take a tremendous amount of effort, work and time. I encourage you to let your local mayors, council members and staff members know how much you enjoy the events and appreciate their efforts to organize the events.
If you are blessed with good health, family and friends; take time and reflect on what you have. Make sure your family and friends know that you truly appreciate them for themselves, not for what they can do for you. Appreciate them for just being there. If you feel blessed, share those blessings with others.
Although I feel like the holidays sneaked up on us this year, I will make time to share joy and happiness with others. I am thankful for the many, many friends and neighbors I have in our great county. I am blessed, and I know it!
Now, to wrap up this column for the year 2024. I sincerely hope and pray everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year. I pray for joy, peace and goodwill for this world. Finally, I thank God for His grace and mercy.
