Central Elementary School (CES) kindergarten students and their adults participated in a fun night of literacy learning and family engagement. The event, sponsored by Literacy Everywhere!, was led by CES kindergarten teacher Leslie Wells.
The purpose of the event was to help adults understand student data from assessments such as i-Ready Diagnostic tests. First the data was reviewed, and adults set goals they would like for their student to achieve in the upcoming weeks. Then Wells shared fun and innovative ways to incorporate literacy learning into their daily routines at home.
Meg Masters, project director of the Literacy Everywhere! grant, shared a fun craft based on the book “Pick a Circle, Gather Squares: A Fall Harvest of Shapes.” Each student received a copy of this book, a copy of “Mother Goose’s Nursery Rhymes” and a bag containing treats and a literacy game, courtesy of Literacy Everywhere!
Finally, door prizes were distributed. Each family received something to take home, including a Bedtime Box donated by Literacy Everywhere! to help students establish healthy bedtime routines.
The next literacy event will be on December 16, and will be for all students at Central Elementary and Central High School and will feature the second annual Parade of Trees, as well as special guests, fun literacy activities, free books, and many other treats! Thank you to Meg Masters, Literacy Everywhere! project director, for sharing pictures and information on the kindergarten literacy event.
