Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
This week’s column is going to be a short one as I am on business travel and not much going on this month with both Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving holidays this month.
Many remember Richard Penton was a wonderful citizen of Equality and loved this community very much. He purchased his ancestral homestead on Coosa County Road 98 when it was put on the market a couple of decades ago, as well as some of the adjoining land that was once a part of the original homestead. He loved Equality and loved promoting it as “Not just a dot on the map,” a quote we still like to use as a community slogan. It was a loss to our community when he passed away.
After his passing the old Penton homestead passed hands more than once in a short time, but it is now owned by a couple that love its history and character. Dave and Ruth have spent the past year updating it and making many needed repairs and adding a few personal touches that honor the house’s history. Some may agree, some may not, but it is no longer the pink or salmon house on County Road 98, but now a nice shade of blue to honor Ruth’s Dutch heritage. They have also added a garage with a horse barn, lovely landscape plantings and many antiques.
In thanks to the local tradesmen that have worked with them to see this project completed and to meet their many neighbors they are holding an open house Sunday, November 10, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. They ask if anyone has any pictures of the house throughout its history to bring a copy as a housewarming gift.
Events and activities in the area include:
The Equality Volunteer Fire Department (EVFD) is still looking for more volunteers to support their efforts in keeping us all safe. They need as much involvement as they can get so again, please come and support your community by volunteering your time at a great organization. Also, you are free to join the training on the first and third Mondays at 6:30 p.m., even if just to watch and find out more about what EVFD has going on.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department’s first Saturday is tomorrow, November 2, so any baked goods and volunteers are appreciated. Come at 8 a.m. for breakfast, bake sale and rummage sale, and return at 11 a.m. for lunch plates. This event is not just a great way to support our volunteer fire department, but also a great opportunity to stay connected with the community with food and fellowship.
Because of the upcoming holiday season Equality Neighborhood Watch for November and December are being combined to one meeting on December 5 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please join us for a community gathering with food, safety tips, sheriff’s updates, and socializing with our neighbors.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
