On October 21, the Central Coosa Junior High football squad was joined by several sophomore football players to compete in a Junior Varsity game versus Fayetteville’s Junior Varsity team. The young Cougars capped the season with a 32-0 win over the Wolves. Head junior high football coach Dr. Terry Conkle explained, “The game featured a variety of players positioned on the field under experimental conditions.”
Dr. Conkle added, “The game at Fayetteville involved a group of guys who have truly never practiced together as a unit and they persevered. Five quarterbacks led the offensive charge, notably Javarious Wilson and Ben Jones stood tough at that position. Ja’Qualyn Kelly and Braylon Murray, at running back, led a running attack in a manner that would please any coach. Other props go to Kaleb Ballard, Grayson Kelly, Wyatt Kimbrell, Jacquez Parker, and Ayden Williams. Sophomores who contributed with impressive play were Zavion Abston, John Brimer, Jadon Marbury, Kenyon Richardson, Eli Self, Kendel Luke, and James Duncan. Every team member deserves credit for this win, because everyone played throughout the game. The players demonstrated great teamwork enveloped by positive attitudes and a desire to literally ‘study and learn football.’ Those traits added to a competitive spirit which led to the team’s success throughout the season.”
Dr. Conkle ended with, “The victory over Fayetteville comes following a lone loss to a tough, undefeated Central of Clay County junior high team who was dominated by the Cougars everywhere except the scoreboard. Two big plays were the difference in that game; otherwise the team played great and had great effort. The Coosa team had two schools cancel games, and still finished with a 3-win, 1-loss season. The team amassed 145 points over the season and yielded only 46 points, 34 of which were scored by Clay Central. Considering the positives from this season, the future looks promising for Central Coosa football.”
Thank you to coach Conkle and his staff for leading the Central Cougar junior varsity in an impressive season; we look forward to the players’ continued success in subsequent seasons.
