The third annual Empowered to Conquer (ETC) assembly recently took place at Central High School with ETC representatives and partners discussing the importance of mental health with on-campus seventh through twelfth grade students.
Students discussed their current dreams for the future and what their emotional and mental state is currently. They also viewed a video interview of author Liz Huntely, who shared her challenging childhood laced with abuse. Students learned of the hope that can be found in coping with mental health challenges through literacy outlets such as journaling and reading. Every student received a bag of snacks sponsored by Buffalo Rock Pepsi and a journal.
In partnership with the Literary Everywhere Grant, Empowered to Conquer had the chance to give students hope for accomplishing their dreams by appropriately coping with their current challenges so they will not become barriers to their success. As a result, 170 students signed up for Limitless Mentoring for this school year and will receive weekly or monthly mentoring sessions.
Thank you to the Literacy Everywhere Grant team, Children’s Policy Council, Bridgeways, New Home Baptist Church, New Elam #1 Baptist Church, the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Coosa Schools teachers and administration for their partnership in making this program available to our students. ETC is a youth empowerment organization created and directed by Central graduate Brittany Leonard Hogan.
