Literacy Everywhere! presented a professional development session to elementary and high school teachers focusing on academic partnerships and ways to increase parent engagement. Meg Masters, project director for Literacy Everwhere!, shared positive outcomes that are seen at schools where parents, teachers and students are academic partners.
Teachers were asked to reflect on three areas where they can focus to actively build relationships with all families and ensure every family knows how well their child is performing in relation to the most important learning standards.
The first area, building relationships, was presented by CHS teachers Pamela Belyeu and Brett Thomas, who spoke about their experiences with home visits and how they impact both academic achievement and positive behavior.
The second area was presented by Lisa Compher. Mrs. Compher, a third grade teacher at CES, focused on ensuring families understand student performance. She specifically focused on communicating with families in ways that are easy to understand.
CES kindergarten teacher Leslie Wells presented the final area of focus, helping parents take action at home. She explained how learning events can help families by receiving coaching support and provide opportunities for families to practice implementing new strategies.
Ron Mirr, of RM Consulting, helped answer additional questions about parent engagement for the session.
