Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
I am making progress on the house. Hoping to get that wood stove completely installed by the first week of October, but we will see.
Plans have a way of changing without notice. Such as with my job; after months of contract protests and working in a state of limbo I was asked if I would stay on when things got resolved, and I said yes. As soon as I said yes the company that feels they will win sent me an email stating unless I relocate to Colorado Springs, Colorado, they will not hire me for the job I have been doing for the past couple of years.
So now I am back wondering where and what I will be doing for income come January. But hopefully I will be toasty warm having had this wood stove installed, so there is a bright side to life’s situations.
Still looking for plants for my winter garden. Rodger’s Shrubbery and Jenny’s General put out a poll asking for interest before spending the money on the minimum buy at the grower, and there were only two responses. Not enough interest to invest that much money, so there will be no winter veggie plants, but they will be offering some mums and cornstalks for fall decorations. So if you are wanting mums come to downtown Equality and buy from local small businesses.
Events and activities in the area include:
The Equality Volunteer Fire Department (EVFD) is still looking for more volunteers to support their efforts in keeping us all safe. They need as much involvement as they can get so again, please come and support your community by volunteering your time at a great organization. Also, you are free to join the training on the first and third Mondays at 6:30 p.m., even if just to watch and find out more about what EVFD has going on.
Coosa County Live, Equality’s Performing Arts Center, has a fourth Friday live performance by Vintage Vibe, the house band, and calling this event “Hurricane Party” because of the possible Hurricane Helene coming through the area, this Friday, September 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings. They have a generator and solar batteries in case there is a loss of power.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department sponsored Bingo is the last Saturday of the month, September 28. The cards are $1 each, and all proceeds support the Equality Volunteer Fire Department. Come out and have a little fun while supporting the community.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
