Central Coosa athletics off to great start

Special to the News
Last Friday night varsity football faced off against Sylacauga for the opening game of the season.
The Coosa County Schools Honor Guard started the night with the Posting of the Colors, with Rep. Ben Robbins on hand for the coin toss.
Despite the 2A Central Cougars being pitted against the 5A Sylacauga Aggies, the Cougars gave the Aggies some competition in the first quarter with a score of 21-14. Although the Sylacauga numbers would ultimately take over in the second half, Coach Daniel Flowers said he was proud of how the players never gave up despite having to play two-ways against a team where most of the players are only playing one-way.
The offensive player of the game was Javon Peterson with 150 yards rushing and 75 yards passing. Isaac Lee and Alex Williams were defensive players of the game, playing the entirety of the game. Thank you to our cheerleaders and band, as well as fans, for being there to support our Cougars all the way to the end.
Everyone is looking forward to seeing how we perform against 3A Randolph County tonight after we showed we have the potential to take it up a notch this season. Kick-off is 7 p.m. Fast Entrance tickets can be purchased on GoFan. Thank you to PTO president Maressa Ware for providing pictures.
Tuesday would bring wins for both the Central junior high football team and the Central varsity volleyball team.
Junior high football coach Terry Conkle also noted the challenges of a team small in numbers, but also noted the boys played well. He added that he saw things to work on and believes his team will learn from their mistakes, but they are celebrating the joy in the big success. He added that there is talent in the program and he sees a good future for CHS football.
Quarterback Waylon Chapman was the offensive player of the game with some good reeds. Wyatt Kimbrell was the defensive player of the game with several tackles. The Central Cougars took the Vincent Yellowjackets with a final score of 44-6.
Varsity volleyball also had a strong start to their at-home season taking the first three sets against the Reeltown Rebels with scores of 10-25, 15-25 and 23-25 with a close game to close it. Coach Elliott said everyone played well in the close games.
Senior Brynlee Hawthorne had a strong run of serves while eighth grader Henley Stevens had a strong defense. In addition, seniors Traci Cox and Brynlee Hawthorne did a great job leading their team in playing as a group, with both the starters and bench coming out strong for the Lady Cougar’s first home games.
Come support our Lady Cougars as we host the Coosa Tournament Saturday at Central Gym starting at 9 a.m. Fast Entrance tickets available on GoFan. Go Cougars!
