An illegal immigrant is in custody in Coosa County on multiple drug-related and other charges following calls reporting his erratic behavior over the weekend.

On Sunday, August 4, while on patrol, Deputy Payton responded to the area of U.S> Highway 280 and Alabama Highway 9 in reference to a Hispanic male in the middle of Highway 280 attempting to stop vehicles.

Reports had come in to the Sheriff’s Office that the individual was attempting to run in front of vehicles on the highway.

Upon arriving at the scene, Payton approached the individual and attempted to talk to him. However, the individual was speaking Spanish and allegedly also became aggressive toward Payton.

Payton utilized a technique to get the man down to the ground. After handcuffing the individual and getting him standing again, the man reportedly attempted to kick Payton.

After detaining him, Payton went to the individual’s vehicle to get his identification, at which time he saw a clear bag that appeared to contain narcotics in the passenger seat.

Payton retrieved the bag from the vehicle and confirmed that it contained methamphetamine.

Ultimately, the reports and response led to the arrest of 43-year-old David Reyes-Ambrosio of Pinson. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), possession of cocaine, possession of dangerous drugs (fentanyl), possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and public intoxication.

Reyes-Ambrosio’s total bond for all seven charges was set at $22,000. As of press time he remained in custody at the Coosa County Jail awaiting trial.

Ambrosio is listed among Shelby County’s most wanted. Additionally, Chief Deputy Scott Hammond reported that, since he is an illegal immigrant, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, has been informed about Reyes-Ambrosio and is awaiting the outcome of his court proceedings.

Anyone who observes or suspects illegal activity is encouraged to report it to the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office at 256-377-4922 or online at www.coosacountyso.org. Anonymous tips are also welcome.
