Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
I haven’t been too active lately, so not much news other than recovery. I tend to be a creature of habit, getting up the same time every morning without an alarm, getting dressed, heading to the store, making my coffee, getting to work.
However, on Friday mornings I will start getting things organized and cleaned up for the Coosa County Live free events. This last week I was doing that, hands full, when I turned and tripped over a toolbox I had forgotten was left in the center of the room, bruising my shins. Then as I fell, I twisted so that I was not face planting or getting stabbed with the scissors in my hands, and my back landed on the motorcycle my husband had been working on earlier in the week. The footpeg jabbed into my back, my head hit the frame, and my side slid across the frame, and elbow hit the concrete floor.
The pain was excruciating, and I can remember looking up and thinking the motorcycle was going to fall on me at any minute, but was surprised it stood just rocking on its center stand.
I am doing OK now other than the scraped skin and bruising. And a bit more careful about making sure all gets picked up and put away every night so that there will be no more morning spills. I have learned one thing; I better carry my cell phone with me because nobody is going to be checking on me on a regular basis.
If it had been more serious, I would not have been found for the whole day. Maybe I should get one of those emergency buttons; you remember, “I have fallen and can’t get up” commercials offering a pendant with an emergency button to call for help.
Events and activities in the area include:
From R. Wade Turner, Equality Volunteer fire chief, “Equality Volunteer Fire Department (EVDF) is currently looking for candidates for the position of volunteer firefighter/EMS personnel, and/or any combination of that. Experience preferred but not required. Come out and get involved. Please support your community; we would love to have you. There is a job for everybody from frontline fire personnel to EMS to behind-the-scenes support personnel, including support personnel for the first Saturday fundraiser events. We need as much involvement as we can get, so again, please come and support your community by volunteering your time at a great organization.”
The first Saturday fundraiser is Saturday, August 3 – tomorrow. Come at 8 a.m. for breakfast, bake sale and rummage sale, and return at 11 for lunch plates, which in addition to the usual hot dog and hamburger plates, a fish sandwich will also be offered while supplies last. This event is not just a great way to support our volunteer fire department, but also a great opportunity to stay connected with the community with food and fellowship.
Labor Day Boston butt and rib sale fundraiser is here. Boston butts: $35. Rack of ribs: $30. Delivery is Friday, August 30, from 5-7 p.m. and Saturday, August 31, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Equality Fire Department Fire Hall and Lodge next to Quality Food Mart on Highway 9. To place an order contact Jackie Dean at 256-786-1169 or Jean Moe Prince at 256-537-1884 or email EqualityVFD@outlook.com. If you email, make sure you get a reply to ensure your order was received.
Rebel Homesteaders of Coosa and Elmore counties are holding a community yard sale in the parking lot of Jenny’s General Store on August 3, also tomorrow. Come by and learn more about the group, as well as see what there is to offer for sale for cash or barter.
Equality Methodist Church presents “Gospel on the Green” featuring Holy Destiny from Clanton on August 4 at 5 p.m., located at 281 Highway 259. Concessions will be served. For more information visit www.facebook.com/EqualityMC or call 334-541-4063.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
