Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
I have done some work on the house, but working alone I haven’t made a lot of progress. Jenny’s General has not seen any summer surge in business, but quite the opposite, and had two customers the past week and two customers the week before. I do want to spend a morning picking blueberries at Oakachoy Blueberry Farm on Coosa County Road 98 before they are gone.
I am a project person and always have some project going, whether it is working on the house, homestead, sewing, quilting, crocheting, cooking, canning, curing, etc. If I don’t like how things are going, I work to change it. When I had an episode with pinched nerves in my neck and couldn’t move or breathe without severe agonizing pain I reached out for help. I saw a spine surgeon, physical therapist, acupuncturist, chiropractor, and massage therapist until I got some relief and could get on with my life.
I can’t imagine life doing nothing, yet I see it so often these days. Folks sitting or lying, looking at screens; whether a tablet, phone, or TV; and doing nothing else other than complaining that life is not fair, life is hard, life is painful. But doing nothing to change their circumstances.
Yes, I watch TV, but I also clean a messy room, wash dirty dishes, vacuum the rugs, and sweep the floor. Yes, I play on my phone, but I also research new recipes and plan a budget. There needs to be balance.
I have been told “you are so lucky; I want what you have.” I respond with no luck, just work for it like I did. I worked from an early age, I saved and invested, and I lost much in economic hard times. I worked and saved and invested again; I lost again. I am on my third round in my life of working hard, investing, and we are in hard times which could get harder.
I am not lucky; I am blessed that I have a work ethic and experience in knowing that I can and will survive. There are folks with real disabilities that wish they could get up, get out and do what needs to be done, which makes those that are able bodied but unwilling so sad in my eyes. They just don’t know the blessing of getting up and getting things done instead of watching someone else’s antics on a screen.
Events and activities in the area include:
Equality Neighborhood Watch meetings are held the fourth Thursday of every month, with this month’s meeting being held yesterday.
Coosa County Live has a live performance with country music singer Duane Parker the fourth Friday of the month, July 26, tonight, beginning at 7 p.m. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department sponsored Bingo is on the last Saturday of each month, this month being held on July 27, tomorrow, at 4 p.m. The cards are $1 each, and all proceeds go to support our volunteer fire department, so come out for a fun evening while helping the community.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
