Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
I made it through the holiday. I did not get to be as productive as I had desired because of all the activities and the rain.
We needed the rain, but the humidity and heat just made it that much more difficult for me to work outside. Lots of water breaks for me. I did get some drywall up and mud on it, fixed a stall in the barn, went to a Fourth of July gathering, played in a pool with my grandson and watched fireworks, helped a neighbor start her own guinea fowl flock, and attended an open house retirement party.
My garden is still a wild mess and probably will remain that way until fall planting. I do have a great growth of sunchokes, but I think they can grow anywhere and still thrive. I do better with fall and winter crops, fewer invasive plants and cooler temperatures to work in. But I try every spring hoping this year will be different.
It was a busy weekend in town, as well. You may have missed it, but Equality Volunteer Fire Department included a very popular fish fry last week during their monthly first Saturday fundraising event. There was also a fundraising yard sale at Kendrick Baptist Church. There were also fireworks on the lake and family gatherings all around our community.
Coosa Live has Open Mic Night the second Friday of the month, which is tonight, July 12. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
Equality Neighborhood Watch meetings are held the fourth Thursday of every month. Come join us July 25 for information on what is happening around the area from the sheriff’s report to first responder report and all the community announcements with food and fellowship included.
Good Grove Missionary Baptist Church is holding Family & Friends Day on July 21 at 2 p.m. The theme is “When Friends Become Family” with guest speaker Pastor Stanford Benson from First Baptist Church Rockford. Come be a special guest and enjoy the warmth of church family.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department sponsored Bingo is on the last Saturday of each month, this month being held on July 27 at 4 p.m. The cards are $1 each, and all proceeds go to support our volunteer fire department, so come out for a fun evening while helping the community.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
