Trooper-involved incident leads to pending charges in Birmingham

At approximately 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, an incident occurred when a trooper with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division noticed a two-vehicle crash blocking the roadway near the 1700 block of Tallapoosa Street in Birmingham within Jefferson County.
While the ALEA trooper was investigating the crash, one of the drivers involved in the crash attempted to take control of the trooper’s patrol vehicle. However, the ALEA trooper was able to keep the suspect from gaining control of the patrol vehicle, and subsequently the individual was taken into custody.
The suspect was then transported to UAB Hospital to be evaluated; criminal charges are currently pending. The ALEA trooper involved was also transported to UAB Hospital for evaluation.
Officers with the Birmingham Police Department also responded to the scene and assisted with the incident. Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing.
