Summer heat! I know a lot of folks didn’t like the deep freeze we had, but at least I could throw a sweater on and another log on the fire. But then again, either this heat or winter freeze I can’t work outdoors either!
So my garden is pretty much kaput, and I’m just focusing on keeping the animals cool and hydrated. Which means the water bill is up. We have a well, and a pump, just need to get one hooked up to the other and garden and animals can be watered without worrying about high water bills or using potable water resources better utilized elsewhere.
I am hoping to spend much of the holiday weekend getting things accomplished around the homestead; however, I have been invited out to several functions. I hate to tell them “Sorry, I would rather be mudding drywall or digging up my garden instead” so will at least go for a bit. I will organize my time so that I can attend functions, celebrate the independence of this country, and still be productive, as well.
Coosa Live has nothing happening this Friday, July 5, as it is date night for the owners. Open Mic night is the second Friday of the month, July 12. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department (EVFD) First Saturday fund raiser is Saturday, July 6, tomorrow. Come at 8 a.m. for breakfast, bake sale and rummage sale, and return at 11 for lunch plates, which in addition to the usual hot dog and hamburger plates a fish sandwich will also be offered while supplies last.
This event is not just a great way to support our volunteer fire department, but also a great opportunity to stay connected with the community, with food and fellowship.
Equality Neighborhood Watch meetings are held the fourth Thursday of every month. Come join us July 25 for information on what is happening around the area from the sheriff’s report to first responder report and all the community announcements with food and fellowship included.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department sponsored bingo is on the last Saturday of each month, this month being held on July 27 at 4 p.m. The cards are $1 each, and all proceeds go to support our volunteer fire department, so come out for a fun evening while helping the community.
As a reminder, please consider becoming a foster parent. Upcoming classes start on Tuesday, July 9, 6 p.m. at Coosa County DHR office, 141 Jackson Street in Rockford.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
