A Sylacauga man was arrested Sunday on four charges, including three drug-related charges, following a traffic stop.
Chief Deputy Scott Hammond reported that on June 9 Deputy Payton received a call for a welfare check for an unattended child in a vehicle. Upon Payton’s arrival, the vehicle had already left the area.
While patrolling U.S. Highway 231, Payton observed a vehicle matching the description of the one reported. He witnessed a traffic violation and proceeded to conduct a traffic stop to also check on the child’s well-being, based on the initial report.
Payton initiated his lights at County Road 10 along Highway 231, but the driver did not stop until the Elmore County line.
Payton identified the driver as Charles Wayne Willard III, 20 years old of Sylacauga. He had Willard step out of the vehicle and noticed a weapon and a bag containing a green leafy substance in the vehicle.
Upon further searching the vehicle, Payton found more controlled substances, specifically a mushroom extract gummy pack and a THC-infused gummy pack.
Willard was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, attempting to elude law enforcement officers, and driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
His total bond for all four charges was set at $14,000. As of press time he remains in custody at the Coosa County Jail.
Anyone who suspects or observes illegal activity is encouraged to report it to the Sheriff’s Office at 256-377-4922 or online at www.coosacountyso.org. Anonymous tips are also welcome.
