The Central Coosa Master Builders Robotics team competed in the National World War II Museum Robotics Competition in New Orleans, Louisiana, this month. The theme of this year’s competition was “Our War Too: Women in Service.” The team competed in three rounds of the robot game in which they had to program a robot to complete missions, as well as present an engineering project about a woman who made a significant contribution to service in World War II.
Prior to competing, the team spent Friday touring educational and historic New Orleans sites such as the New Orleans Mint and the French Quarter. They also visited the home of the New Orleans Pelicans NBA team and the Superdome, home of the New Orleans Saints.
The Master Builders engineering project focused on creating a web page about Dorothy Olson, a member of the WASPs who transported aircraft from factories to bases to allow male pilots to focus on combat missions.
The team earned 155 points during the robotics game competition. Coach Masters and Coach Dre were interviewed during the competition about bringing the team all the way from Alabama.
This was the third time the Master Builders have competed in this particular competition. Team members are eighth graders Kaleb Ballard, Kyle Ballard, Matthew Eubanks, Grayson Kelly, and David Lee. Meg Masters is the coach, and former CHS student Dre Burton serves as team mentor.
Robotics is a great way for students to learn coding, teamwork and STEM principles in a fun environment. Students in third through sixth grade who are interested in joining the Coosa County Schools robotics team are invited to attend an interest meeting when school begins in August.
Thank you to Meg Masters, sponsor of the Robotics team, for providing pictures and information on this great opportunity she provides our students.
