The saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun,” holds true for CCCTC. Back in March, students currently enrolled in health science courses and/or who have matched with the health science nationally recognized career cluster, were invited on a Chew and Chat to Samford University. Even though it was a rainy day, we began with a long walk across the beautiful campus. Once at the College of Health Sciences, we were greeted by Ms. Shannon Ashe, simulation educator and coordinator, Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation. Ms. Ashe welcomed our group to campus, provided background information about her career in health sciences and outlined our day.
Next, we visited the simulation lab, where students practiced patient care and identified diagnoses on patient simulation mannequins. Students got hands-on experiences with both medium and high fidelity mannequins as we moved about the different areas within the simulation lab, such as the flex lab, the high fidelity simulation suite and acute care suite. When students were practicing on the high fidelity mannequins, groups were rotating among three stations.
One station was replicating a potential ER visit that included using a defibrillator; two, was performing chest compressions while being able to visualize on a computer screen if you were adequately saving the life or not; and three, students were able to manipulate the symptoms shown on the mannequin and discover how to address them adequately.
Lastly, we heard from Karen L. Eddins, undergraduate recruitment and admissions counselor, Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing; Jonathan Parker, director of pharmacy admissions, McWhorter School of Pharmacy; AnaKate Andrasko, academic advisor, School of Public Health; and Karen Ryan, administrative assistant, School of Health Professions about their respective college’s offerings and upcoming events.
As a result of these conversations, we will have one student attending Pharmacy Camp this summer at Samford University. It was truly amazing to see this group of students look so at home in the health care setting. Thank you to Central Coosa Schools Career Coach Keslie Garrett for sharing pictures and information.
