Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
Spring is in the air, and our last frost day should be behind us, time to get those gardens in. I am planning an old-fashioned garden like my grandmother used to plant, with flowers, veggies and herbs all planted in the same plot.
Both my grandmothers grew stuff; one was a larger scale farmer with acres and tractors with equipment to work it, and the other was just under an acre and worked it with hand tools. The latter was my father’s mother. She died before I was born, but everyone spoke of her gardens flourishing with an abundance of herbs, flowers and vegetables. I want to do the same this year and hopefully years to come.
Rodger’s Shrubbery has vegetables, herbs and flower plants available, as well as hanging baskets with flowers, Kimberly, or Boston ferns. Now is the time to come get your spring plants for both the front porch and garden beds.
Jenny’s General has received a shipment of Amish rolled butter; however, can’t compete price wise with Winn-Dixie’s price. The shop also has Amish cheese, jams, jellies, and preserves available. Very popular are the candied jalapenos, pickled garlic and pickled beets.
Is there anything you would like to see in a small country general store that Jenny’s can investigate stocking? Jenny is very open for suggestions.
CJ’s Fishing Hole in downtown Equality has posted their spring/summer fishing season hours, Tuesday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stop in for your fishing needs. They have live bait, tackle and so much more. Follow their Facebook page for updates and share your fishing success stories with them.
Saturday, April 6, is First Saturday Equality Volunteer Fire Department’s monthly fundraising event, and they sure could use more baked goods donated for the bake sale, as well as your slightly used items for their rummage sale.
Come join the breakfast for a donation at 8 a.m., and lunch starting at 11 a.m. Bake Sale and Rummage Sale both run the entirety of the day or until items are sold out. Come support our wonderful volunteer fire department.
No event at Coosa Live (formerly known as Equality Performing Arts Center) this Friday as it is date night for my husband and me. The next Coosa Live event will be Open Mic Night Friday, April 12. Hope to see you then.
Thursday, April 25, is the next Equality Neighborhood Watch Meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please plan on attending an informative and enjoyable social event.
Please join in for EVFD Bingo on Saturday, April 27, at 4 p.m. at the Equality Volunteer Fire Department Hall on Highway 9 for a fun night of bingo. This is a fund-raising event to support the Equality Volunteer Fire Department. Games are $1 a card and lots of fun. There will be concession sales, and all proceeds support the EVFD, so come join the fun.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
