Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
It has been a quiet week here in Equality. There was a canning class that a group of homesteaders held, which is nice to see happen.
I love canning and grew up canning. My family grew a large garden, and late summer and fall was spent in the kitchen processing the harvest of tomatoes and beans. Probably a lot more than that, but I remember tomatoes because my job was to run the food mill to remove the skins and seeds. Also, my job was to snap and string the beans after I picked and washed them and probably why I don’t grow beans in my garden.
I am so thankful for growers and farmers and so excited that this week starts the spring season of my CSA with Coosa Fancy Organic Farm. Can’t wait to get my fresh veggies grown locally.
Rodger’s Shrubbery, well Jenny’s General since there is no sign on the greenhouse and the plants are kept in front of the store, will have plants coming soon. Bedding annual flowers, some vegetables, herbs, and shrubbery.
This year will also be adding in native plants from Recreative Natives, mostly pollinators with a few trees like Paw Paw and American Persimmon. After battling the invasion of non-native plants for years now I am glad to see the growing popularity of bringing back native plants.
Jenny’s General has a shipment of Amish rolled butter arriving and still has cheese, jams, jellies, and preserves available. Very popular is the candied jalapenos, pickled garlic and pickled beets. Jenny’s is also working with ForJars to get canning lids and other canning supplies if possible.
ForJars was there for many of us canners over the past four years when other big corporations closed production, leaving a shortage in supplies. Is there anything you would like to see in a small country general store that Jenny’s can investigate stocking? Open for suggestions.
Friday, March 22, is live music with Sydni Sikes at Coosa Live (formerly known as Equality Performing Arts Center) which is tonight. Come enjoy an evening out enjoying live music. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
Saturday, March 23, at 4 p.m. is Bingo at the Equality Volunteer Fire Department Hall on Highway 9. This is a fund-raising event to support the Equality Volunteer Fire Department. It is $1 a card and lots of fun. There are also concession sales, with all proceeds supporting the EVFD, so come join the fun.
Thursday, March 28, is the next Equality Neighborhood Watch meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please plan on attending an informative and enjoyable social event. You can bring a dish to pass if you like, but not necessary, as there is a community potluck because sharing food always goes well with gatherings.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
