Special to the News
Coosa Upward was started in March of 2022 to bring a county-wide, year-round, youth sports experience to the youth of Coosa County.
The program is unique in that it aims to provide athletic, spiritual, mental, and social growth to its participants while functioning as an all-volunteer organization within the county. We are thankful that Coosa youth can grow up playing youth sports together which will increase their competitive edge when playing together at the high school level.
The program also provides an opportunity for our families to make connections with local churches. The league is hosted by the Weogufka Family Worship Center, but is supported through a partnership with multiple Coosa County churches, including those who served as Game Day Host churches this season, Concord Baptist Church, Equality Methodist, New Home Baptist Church, Providence Baptist Church, and Sardis Baptist Church.
Registration costs are kept at $50 for participants thanks to generous contributions from the community, including Bronze level sponsors, Tom and Pinky Reichert, Infinity Real Estate, Dennis Sanford, and Central Alabama Fire Protection. Silver level sponsors include Coosa County Family Dentistry, Empowered to Conquer, the Town of Rockford, Albert and Peggy Palmer, Tommy and Nancy Thornton, New Home Baptist Church, Alabama One, Kellyton Fire Department, Providence Baptist Church, and Concord Baptist Church. Gold level sponsors include Nelson Electric, Accordia Health, and the Goodwater Fire Department. Platinum level sponsors include the Weogufka Family Worship Center and New Providence Baptist Church.
Last but not least, thanks to our coaches who are the backbone of the league working with our youth on athletic and spiritual development every week at practices, Jessica Skates, Brian Voss, Charles Moore, Justine Clark, Devon Ward, Chris Crumbly, Eden Nickolson, Harry Lasley, Ethan Moore, Sidney Thornton, Travis Ward, and Marcus Castleberry. Our volunteer referees this season were Shundell Russaw, Elijah Richardson and Alex Williams with Ethan Cosby running the scoreboard.
Thank you to Valerie Smith who volunteers to manage the concession stand, as well as Lynn Castleberry who serves as our social media coordinator and runs registration.
We still have room for a couple of players on each of our baseball and t-ball teams for the upcoming season on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please text Debi Stover at 256-401-3281 to register. Stay informed by joining us on Facebook at Upward Coosa Sports.
