Union Square News
Ruby Johnson
March is a windy month and also special, because it’s Women’s Month, and we can be windy and a windstorm sometimes, especially the ones born in March.
I want to honor some special women from Union Square and around town. Union Square neighbors are Mrs. 90-year-young Patsy Johnston and Ran Wilson who blows back the wind. They are tough. Pat Windsor, who has a quiet spirit, will celebrate her birthday on Monday. Happy birthday, Pat, from the Square. Also recognizing nurse Lynne Taylor, who is my sweet personal nurse; Joyce Taylor, who is there for me in many ways, from the time when I moved back to Alabama when she worked at First Bank up until now still, she is in my corner; my older sister, Peggy Crayton, who taught me life, all over again; Minister Joann Shealey, who helps me to grow in God and to know the real and true Father, our Heavenly Father; Lady Dorothy Benson, who I love dearly and who gives me strength and more strength each time I see her (Her mother’s strength rubbed off on her, and she just passes it on to others.); Christa Jennings, who keeps me in line so I won’t stumble when the wind blows a little too hard. I have to laugh on that one. Thank you, Christa. Last but not least, sweet Mrs. Betty Shaw Leonard, who we just lost on February 25 and laid to rest on March 2. We lost her, but we will not lose her precious memories.
Her home-going service was warm and sweet as she was. Eulogy was done by Pastor Lorenzo Caldwell, doing a wonderful job! New Home’s choir was great! Betty and I had a bond that many were not aware of since we did not visit each other. However, the love was always there. Her deceased son, Eddie Jr., and my deceased daughter, Janice, were very close. When Eddie passed Betty and I became close.
Betty’s grandmother, Mrs. Lilly Marbury; who was my godfather’s, Alex Riggins’, sister; delivered my daughter, Janice, and maybe Eddie Jr. I don’t know that now. Eddie Jr. spent time at Janice’s home before he moved to Ohio. Betty and I shared testimonies of how God was a healer, and we would get so happy praising God wherever we were.
Betty was a classic well-dressed lady with a lovely smile on her face all the time, and she has a son just like her, always well dressed, even on his job as he worked hard. Those clothes did not stop him from being a hard worker. I was in Walmart one day. I asked him if he was the president of Walmart; he was so sharp. But he was still working hard, as one working outside. We laughed. I thought his mother sure taught him well. I admired that.
We will surely miss Betty and praying for the family.
Let’s pray for God’s will in all churches.
Happy birthday to all March babies.
