Richville Rundown
Sheila Ward
Today is the first day of March! Spring is almost here. Since the groundhog didn’t see his shadow, it’s supposed to be early. I think everyone is ready for springtime. The weather this past week has been really nice, even being windy.
Folklore says that if March comes in like a lion, then it will go out like a lamb. Another weather folklore is if it thunders in February it will frost in April. I think this is the first year I have not noted days of thunder. Maybe because that was something that Mama and Daddy always did, writing it down on the calendar.
Don’t forget to come out and vote on Tuesday, March 5. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. While the ballot is very short, there are items that are very important to us as citizens of Coosa County. So, make your choices, but it’s important to come out and vote.
The Richville Neighborhood Watch meets on Thursday, March 7, at 6:30 p.m. with potluck supper at 6 p.m. Come out and see what is going on in our neighborhood.
The Richville Volunteer Fire Department had a good turnout for Bingo last Saturday. They will skip March with the next one in April because of spring break and Easter.
It’s just a little more than six weeks until the end of tax season. So, if you need your taxes done locally and free, you can drop off your taxes to be done in Rockford on Wednesdays from 9 to 2 at the Rockford Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. While walk-ins are welcome, you can call 256-234-0347 to make an appointment. Be sure you tell them it’s for the Rockford location.
Starting March off with scripture from Daniel 2:21, which reads, “He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.”
God created the four seasons we observe, but they are also indicative of spirituality. Winter is often associated with sadness, loneliness and sickness. Summer is a sign of growth and distractions with fall a time to reap success or failure. However, spring is a time of hope and opportunity. We should remember that God is in control, and He has a plan for us.
This past week, Richville lost an icon with the passing of Bud Kelley. Our sympathies to his family. I don’t know what’s going to happen with the store, but the Kelley family put a stamp on our community. Kelley’s Crossroads Grocery has been around for at least 80 years. Over the years, it has changed the role it played, but it has always been a place to find out what’s going on in the community. It’s the last community store in our community and surrounding areas; not sure if there is another “country” store in the county.
Pray for those in our community that are experiencing sickness, as well as those that are grieving with the loss of a loved one. We need to remember the shut-ins and their families, as well. So please pray for their healing in God’s will. God knows their names and needs. Until next week, take care and be joyful!
