Special to the News
The overcast weather did not stop the kids from enjoying the opening games of the 2024 Coosa Upward flag football and cheer season this past Saturday.
The season continues for the next seven weeks with games being played on Saturdays at 10 and 11 a.m. at Keith Bullard Stadium at Central Coosa. Come and enjoy watching our youth have fun as they grow both athletically and spiritually.
There is no admission to games, but individuals can support the league by purchasing food items in the concession thanks to volunteer concession manager Valerie Smith who runs concessions with the volunteers from the Game Day Host churches.
Upward’s opening games were hosted by the Weogufka Family Worship Center who volunteered in the concession while pastor Phillip Alverson provided the game-day devotion during halftime on grace.
Partner churches for this season include Equality Methodist, Providence Baptist, Peace and Goodwill, Concord Baptist, Sardis Baptist, Hatchett Springs, and New Home, who are all serving as Game Day Host churches.
Thank you, also, to volunteer Wanda Young for managing our pictures for opening games, as well as volunteer referees for the season, Shundell Russaw and student athlete referees Elijah Richardson and Alex Williams, and scoreboard operator Ethan Cosby.
The backbone of the league is the volunteer coaches which include Jessica Skates, Eden Nickolson, Justine Clark, Sidney Thornton, Brian Voss, Harry Clasley, Charles Moore, Ethan Moore, Devin Ward, Travis Ward, Chris Crumbley, and Marcus Castleberry this season.
Individuals can join Upward for updates and more on Facebook at Upward Coosa Sports thanks to social media volunteer Lynn Castleberry.
Registration for the upcoming co-ed Coosa Upward baseball league will be Saturday, February 24, at Keith Bullard Stadium from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost for registration February 24 is $50 thanks to generous donations from community members, businesses and churches. The regular registration fee after February 24 is $80.
Anyone who would like to volunteer with the league, donate to the league, or who has questions, please text Debi Stover at 256-401-3281.
