Two individuals were arrested this week on theft and drug charges, with a third suspect still at large as of press time.
On Tuesday, January 9, Sgt. Travis Ward was made aware of a possible vehicle theft in progress in the Stewartville area.
Upon arrival in Stewartville and during the investigation, Ward located both the vehicle in question and another vehicle reportedly stolen from Homewood.
When Ward made contact with the suspects, one white male took off on foot. Warrants have been obtained, but that suspect had not yet been arrested as of press time.
Ward proceeded to search the stolen vehicle and found a crystal-like substance and drug paraphernalia in it. The substance was field tested and tested positive for crystal methamphetamine.
Chief Deputy Scott Hammond reported that 32-year-old Tony Randall Higgins of Gadsden and 28-year-old Morgan Elaine Whetstone of Stewartville were both arrested on January 9 and both charged with first-degree theft of property, first-degree receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance (meth), and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Higgins’ total bond was set at $37,500 for all four charges. Whetstone’s total bond amount was unavailable as of press time. Both remained in custody awaiting trial as of press time.
Anyone who observes or suspects illegal activity is encouraged to report it to the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office at 256-377-4922 or online at www.coosacountyso.org. Anonymous tips are also welcome.
