Seniors enjoy annual Escape Room game to prepare for state-mandated Civics Exam

- Purple team finds the silver dollar hidden in the trunk and identify Eisenhower’s achievement in creating the Interstate Highway system.
Just before Christmas break teams of seniors competed in the Break-Out of Central High School Escape Room game. The game, which is a mix of an Escape Room game and an Amazing Race game, was created by Central’s government teacher to help students review for the state-mandated Civics Exam every senior in Alabama must pass in order to graduate. Team members included seniors, family and friends who received the same colored tee to wear during the competition and keep as a souvenir. The game includes 10 rooms with approximately 10 challenge boxes teams must solve in each room.
Once all the challenge boxes in a room are solved, the team receives a colored card with the combo to the matching colored lock on the front door. The first team to solve all 10 rooms and unlock all 10 locks was Team Yellow, which included Kamilya Canada, Heather Joiner, Eden Nickolson, Savannah Snell, and guest player Zack Neloms.
All the teams successfully solved all 10 rooms well under the 3-hour time limit, which shows they really knew their content. Beyond content knowledge, students used life skills such as problem solving and teamwork at the same time they were making memories with their classmates. Thank you to the staff members who made the game possible by volunteering after hours to help run the game, Chris Elliott, Vernon Harmon, Kelli Hilyer, Derek Humphrey, Breezy Johnson, Brandi Lee, Jaques Mitchell, Jacob Moon, Ethan Mynard, Mary White, Shelley Wood, and hearing-impaired interpreter Sue Graham who signed clues for the game; it was hard to tell if the students or teachers were having more fun.
We are pleased to announce that every senior who took the Civics Exam passed, with an impressive school average score of 88%, with McKay Kelley scoring a perfect 100%. All the seniors who passed the Civics Exam will receive Certificates of Achievement to commemorate being one step closer to graduation, and the winning team will receive their grand prize at the Academic Awards celebration.
