The Literacy Everywhere! grant sponsored literacy events for parents of third graders to help them understand the Alabama Literacy Act and how it specifically impacts their third grade student. Parents also learned strategies to help their student with literacy such as fluency practice and online resources available to help improve literacy.
Students attending the night session were treated to snacks, crafts and story time while the adults learned in the Media Center. Mrs. Masters, the Literacy Everywhere! grant coordinator, shared the story “The Halloweiner” by Dav Pilkey. Students also enjoyed making fall suncatchers during their activity time.
Leading the parent sessions in the Media Center were third grade teachers Lisa Compher, Trish Mitchell and Jennifer Trussell. Reading coach Donna Porch and CES principal Kara Forbus discussed the Alabama Literacy Act.
All students who had an adult attend one of the sessions will receive a free book and small prize compliments of Literacy Everywhere!. The third grade class with the most participants will win a pizza party, as well.
Central Elementary will host more literacy events in the future. The next literacy event is scheduled for November 2 from 5:30-7 p.m. and is for kindergarten.
