With Central Coosa schools celebrating homecoming this week, it seems fitting to look back at homecoming highlights from 30 years ago while celebrating three decades of “The Coosa County News.”
The October 21, 1993, edition of the newspaper reported that Central High School’s 1993-1994 Homecoming Queen was Shemekia Tuck, with Shannon Jennings winning Homecoming Princess. The other two twelfth grade representatives that year were Lashay Maxwell and Misty Morris.
That week’s edition also highlighted the “who’s who” list for each of the high school classes, including the class officers and those who were recognized as class favorites and other categories, such as most likely to succeed and best personality.
That week’s edition 30 years ago also highlighted the 1993-1994 Cougar cheerleaders in honor of Homecoming. The cheerleaders included Amanda Dark, Jessica Kelley, Shemekia Tuck, Amber Cooper, Harelyn Kelly, Tiffany Ward, Terri Parker, Angela Shelton, Brooke Breedlove, Marsala Richardson, Tamara Kelley, Ragan Atchely, and Alicia Poole.
Aside from Homecoming activities, other news covered that week included the Town of Rockford proclaiming October 16-23 as “Textile Week in Rockford,” with then Mayor Wayne Windsor signing the proclamation while Avondale employees from the Rockford plant gathered around him.
See other highlights of 30 years of “The Coosa County News” periodically in future editions throughout the year as we continue to celebrate three decades of dedicated local news coverage, honoring “The Coosa County News” first being published May 20, 1992.
