Hanover Volunteer Fire Department of Coosa County recently received a donation of canned emergency drinking water from Anheuser-Busch as part of a grant through the National Volunteer Fire Council.
Ninety-eight cases of 12-ounce water were made available by local Anheuser-Busch wholesale partner, Bama Budweiser of Shelby County.
Hanover Fire reached out to all 10 Coosa County fire departments, including the new Coosa County Ambulance Service, to share in the good fortune of receiving this drinking water grant.
All departments in Coosa County received eight cases of drinking water. Four cases were distributed to the new Coosa County Ambulance Service.
This water will help maintain first-responder hydration during incidents or disasters, which is a major safety concern for all the departments in Coosa County, especially throughout the sweltering summer months.
“All fire departments in Coosa County support one another,” said Hanover Deputy Chief Heather Babecki. “We often work together as a single department during an incident with a singular goal. Drinking water is important on a working fire, especially in the South during our brutal hot and humid summers. With the turnout gear we must wear for protection during a fire, dehydration becomes a very real danger, very fast. Firefighters lose a tremendous amount of fluid during high-intensity response such as battling wildfires and structure fires. Proper hydration is critical to ensure the safety of our firefighters and keep them performing at their best. Thanks to this water donation from Anheuser-Busch and the National Volunteer Fire Council, we now have the resources to keep all firefighters properly hydrated and ready to respond.”
Hanover Volunteer Fire Department is a small rural department serving central Coosa County. Hanover Fire is the first-due fire department for the campus of Coosa Central High School. Hanover Fire also serves multiple churches, a children’s summer camp, a convenience store, and all residences in the Hanover fire district.
In addition to fire protection, Hanover Fire also provides first-response medical aid to the entire community in support of local EMS systems. Equipped with a 3,000 gallon water-tender among its other firefighting apparatus, Hanover Fire is also called upon to provide mutual aide to other fire departments in Coosa and surrounding Alabama counties.
