Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
If this week has shown me anything it is that we have a great new ambulance service, and the Equality Volunteer Fire Department could use more volunteers.
An accident in downtown Equality did have lots of locals who showed up on the scene while waiting on the first responders; they need to show up and volunteer with the fire department. I believe I will; even though I work two jobs, have the farm, babysit our grandson, and everything else, I think I can carve out some time to help our community even more.
Just to be clear, the volunteers we already have are fabulous, but they also have lives and are volunteers so to expect them to be the only ones who come to the call is not fair to them. I was able to direct traffic until the dedicated few showed up, so might as well do it as an official volunteer.
It was the ambulance service’s first day of service, and I believe this incident was one of two calls they received. So, when it shows up on the ballot, please vote to keep it at the low cost of $15 per vehicle tag annually. I know it seems like there is always a small cost being asked until we are nickeled and dimed nonstop, but this is a service we need as evidenced in their first day of operation. You will be grateful if you ever need them.
Don’t forget to support Equality Volunteer Fire Department’s training on the first and third Monday of the month.
July’s Neighborhood Watch meeting is Thursday, July 27, at 6:30 p.m. Look for the new sign to be displayed as you drive on Alabama Highway 9 in the coming weeks. The meetings are informative, as well as a time to meet and greet neighbors and enjoy good eats potluck style.
Equality Performing Arts Center’s (EPAC) next event is “Open Mic Night” on Friday, July 14 – tonight. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. The EPAC provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; call or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
