For the fiftieth year, a group of horses, wagons, mules, and riders made an approximately 185-mile trip to Montgomery this month.
Hosted by the Forney Trail-Blazers Saddle Club, this was the fiftieth anniversary of the Montgomery Wagon Train from Forney to Montgomery. The wagon train departed March 6 and arrived in Montgomery yesterday after traveling approximately 185 miles, predominantly on back roads.
While some make the entire trip, there are also riders who join in for various portions of the ride and then leave, participating in just a part of it. Coming from near and far, this year’s ride included many from out of state such as Louisiana, Florida and South Dakota.
The fiftieth anniversary wagon train traveled through Coosa County early this week, making overnight stops in Kellyton on Monday night and Equality on Tuesday night.
Between the two overnight stops the group traveled along County Road 40, stopping for lunch Tuesday afternoon at Living Word Rockford at Union Church at the intersection of County roads 18 and 40.
Members from Louisiana invited participants to join them for supper on particular nights, as well, offering such fare as pulled pork sandwiches, pastalaya, pork chops, gumbo, and red beans and rice.
The wagon train arrived in Montgomery yesterday, March 16. There will be a parade in Montgomery today around the capitol with lunch to follow, and the wagon train is expected to camp out in Montgomery tonight at the coliseum.
The wagon train arrives in Montgomery each year ahead of the Southeastern Livestock Exposition Rodeo, which is being held in Montgomery March 17-19 this year. This marks the fiftieth year the Forney Saddle Club has made the 185-mile trek on horseback and in wagons from Cherokee County to Montgomery for the rodeo.
