Following a presentation made at last week’s meeting, the Kellyton Town Council is taking into consideration participating in a new youth sports ministry program.
Debi Stover addressed the council with information about Upward K-6 youth sports ministry that will be coming to Coosa County. She shared information on the program with the council and said that they are currently in the process of partnering with churches and that they need adult volunteers and also need prayers.
She explained that student athletes with the Central Coosa School System can serve as assistant coaches. She further explained that they want to use community facilities for practices.
All sports would be practiced throughout the year, including baseball, basketball, football, softball, volleyball, soccer, and more. All of the season games would be played at Central’s school campus on Saturdays, and the goal is to secure facilities where the youth can practice in their communities.
Stover said they hope to start the program in April or May. Part of the aspect of the program will be to share Jesus with area youth and also help build up the families.
The proposed 2022 season would include basketball/cheer for April through June, soccer for August through September, volleyball for October through November, and flag football/cheer for December through January.
The proposed 2023 season is for basketball/cheer from February through March, baseball/softball from May through June, soccer from August through September, volleyball from October through November, and flag football/cheer from December through January.

Poplar Point Camp has given approval as a practice location for District 4. Other projected practice locations include the old Kellyton School in District 1, the old Goodwater School in District 2, Peace and Goodwill in District 3, the old Rockford School in District 4, and the old Weogufka School in District 5, with those practice locations pending council and board approvals.
Church partners throughout the county for the Upward K-6 youth sports ministry are Kellyton Baptist, Kellyton First Methodist, Hatchett Springs Worship Center, Bradford Methodist, New Home, Peace and Goodwill, Ray Baptist, Equality Methodist, Bethesda Baptist, Concord Baptist, Providence Baptist, Rockford Baptist, Sardis Baptist, Cowboy Church, Estelle Community Church, Weogufka Family Worship, and Weogufka Second Baptist.
Stover explained that they are looking for volunteers for the upcoming basketball and cheerleading season. Volunteers are needed for adult head coaches, student athlete assistant coaches, ministry coordinator, game day concessions, referee commissioner, referee, scoreboard operator, and more.
All the resources needed will be provided. Those interested in volunteering are asked to text Debi Stover at 256-401-3281.
Following her presentation regarding the program, the council did not take action. However, Mayor Johnny Sharpe said that the council would consider it.
Also during the meeting it was announced that Councilmember Connie Campbell resigned her seat on the council. As such, Sharpe declared the seat vacant.
It was mentioned that Nancy Fuller is interested in serving on the council, so the town will talk with her to see about filling the vacated seat.
In other business, the council unanimously approved posting to solicit bids for landscaping of the Kellyton Civic Complex for the next two years. Submitted bids must be sealed.
Also during the meeting, John Forbus, candidate for County Commission District 1, introduced himself to the council and addressed council members and attendees. A native of Coosa County, he said that he has several ideas and thinks he can make a difference, adding that he sees changes that need to be made.
The next regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Kellyton Town Council will be held at 6 p.m. March 1.
