Family, Carer and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students recently attended the State Leadership Conference in Montgomery as an opportunity for the students to build leadership skills. A’maiya Jackson competed in Fashion Construction – Level 1, Akeelah Houston was the voting delegate for Central’s FCCLA chapter, and Jeffery Yates was the record keeper and historian, as well as the unofficial trip comedian.
Jeffery stated, “I was thankful to be able to attend the FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Montgomery with two of my fellow club members. During this trip we experienced interactions with many other schools and students from all over who were showcasing different exhibitions and projects they have worked on in their club. My classmate A’maiya created a work of art with her own hands. She handmade a dress to showcase at the conference. We enjoyed meeting new people and watching other students showcase their work with excitement. Seeing other students our age accomplishing so much and showing such pride in their work gives meaning to the word ‘leadership.’ In addition, during this experience we were able to gain knowledge on leadership development and how to enhance our personal skills along with having hands-on experiences. This conference also helped students with public speaking skills and learning how to build confidence among their peers. We also met new people, made new friends and developed personal growth. Creating networks with not only other students, but with other schools. We also enjoyed spending time with our classmates that we do not normally have an opportunity to spend time with, and we enjoyed getting to know one of our teachers outside of school. Lastly, we will benefit from this time learning new skills and watching other students be successful. We hope to attend another conference and continue working on our leadership skills. We hope that next time more of our classmates will be able to attend. We believe they would gain some helpful skills from these conferences.”
Thank you to FCCLA sponsor Mrs. Worley for coordinating the trip for our students and providing an opportunity to showcase their talents and further develop their leadership skills.
