Corrie Haynes with the Spirit of Atlanta drum majors
Corrie Haynes with Central High School band director Daryl Ingram
Corrie Haynes competed against two other Central band members to be named the Pride of Coosa County drum major for the upcoming 2023 marching band season. Since this was a first year experience for Corrie she needed to hone her skills, and Spirit Camp provides that opportunity.
Corrie attended Spirit Camp at Jacksonville State University last week. Although most of Corrie’s time was spent learning in classes, attendees also had the opportunity to enjoy the recreational activities that “college life” offers, such as the pool, student union and recreational center.
Corrie stated the following about this first time experience for her, “I really didn’t expect to make friends when I first arrived at camp. It took a lot of courage to finally speak to people, and I’m really glad that I finally faced my fears of meeting new people. It was a huge step out of my comfort zone. But I’ve learned a lot in just a few days; I’ve even tried something new, and of course made friends. I even got to perform with the Spirit of Atlanta. Not a lot of people can say that.”
To the person who sponsored her, she added, “Thank you for paying and giving me the opportunity to go to Spirit Camp this year. You didn’t have to do that, but you did anyway. It really means a lot to me. I really love and appreciate you.”
Thank you also to Central band director, Daryl Ingram, for coordinating the camp experience for Corrie and providing transportation.
