Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
As I had mentioned in last week’s column, my husband and I live in a vintage farmhouse originally built by Dr. John T. Hunter back in about 1910. We just replaced the roof with an unpainted silver metal roof, and we are looking to repaint our house with several complimentary colors that were popular during the early Edwardian era.
We have been inspired by photos of other similar historic home renovations, and we are leaning toward a light green house with mustard gold for the facades of the dormers, with dark “Charleston” green for all the millwork and burgundy-red accents. We hope that the house will be pretty to look at, and if we can keep our goats from escaping from the back acreage and into our yard, I would really like to have a colorful flower garden, as well.
Rodger’s Shrubbery is closed for the season and will reopen in March just in time for spring planting and a new sign on the greenhouse. However, if you have a gardening need just ask Jenny’s General Store, and we will do what we can to help.
If you were not in downtown Equality this past Saturday, you missed the final for 2022 Equality Volunteer Fire Department’s (EVFD) “First Saturday” events. The first EVFD “First Saturday” for 2023 will be on the seventh of January, where they are planning on offering homemade chili and grilled cheese sandwiches instead of the regular grilled burgers and hot dogs.
EVFD Board had its annual meeting Saturday, December 3, at 1:30 at the lodge in Equality with President Samuel Leonard presiding. Those in attendance heard from treasurer, Jackie Dean, that the fire department is meeting all financial obligations.
Board member Burt Coffman had several updates on the new fire station on County Road 20. A contract has been entered into with J & R Metal for construction to begin during the first quarter of 2023. This phase will start with a 6-inch concrete base for a 40x60x16 metal building. There were no public questions or comments, so the meeting was adjourned.
Elsewhere in Equality, the Equality Methodist Church (EMC) has several outreach programs, including Food Drop, Food Pantry, and Food for the Soul. “Food for the Soul” is a twice-a-week outreach of prepared and delivered nutritionally balanced meals for local senior citizens.
The “Food Pantry” and “Food Drop” are ways to meet food needs for income-limited individuals. The “Food Pantry” is meant for occasional emergencies and not a regular event.
The “Food Drop” is a community outreach by EMC and Andrew’s Chapel Methodist Church of Hanover that serves about 100-150 prequalified individuals that must meet specific requirements set forth by the State of Alabama. The next Food Drop at EMC will be on Friday, December 30. For more information, please contact the church directly.
The EMC would like to welcome visiting Pastor Wayne Cowhick. Please give him a warm welcome as he presents his first sermon on Sunday, December 11.
Bethesda Church in Equality had a special speaker last Sunday at church with lunch afterwards. They will not be caroling this year, but did prepare baskets for shut ins.
Community members who would appreciate your prayers include Joe Mallory who is improving each day. David Traylor is still on chemo and doing better. And Beth McQuitty is still waiting for a kidney to become available. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
This week Rodger Williamson reaches a milestone as his 60th birthday is December 13. Make sure to give him your condolences… I mean birthday wishes.
Needing a point of contact for Nixburg to keep me updated so I can share with the community.
