A Sylacauga man and woman were arrested recently on drug-related charges following a traffic stop.
Deputy Bradberry and Reserve Deputy Davis were on patrol along U.S. Highway 231 near County Road 68 when they observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. They proceeded to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle for speeding.
The driver, 46-year-old Toney Maurice Keith, provided his identification card to deputies. He also had a female passenger in the car, 57-year-old Amy Lori Morris.
They claimed that Morris’s mother was having health issues and that that was why Keith was speeding. While talking to the individuals, deputies noticed that it appeared Morris was trying to hide something in her purse.
Law enforcement officers asked her to step out of the vehicle, and upon her doing so they noticed an open beer can between the seats. They asked if the two had anything else in the car, and they said they did not.
Keith further consented to a search of the vehicle. That search led to deputies finding a crustal-like substance, which was found to be methamphetamine, in the center console.
Additionally, deputies found an eyeglass or sunglasses case in the glove box and checked it. Inside it they found a glass pipe and methamphetamine residue.
Ultimately, Keith was arrested on March 13 and charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at a total of $7,500, and as of press time he remained in custody at the Coosa County Jail.
Morris was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Her total bond was set at $12,500, and she has since been released on bond to await trial.
Anyone who observes or suspects illegal activity is encouraged to report it to the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office at 256-377-4922 or online at www.coosacountyso.org. Anonymous tips are also welcome.
