The free tax assistance program is returning once again this year for Coosa County residents, with the service being offered starting next month.

Volunteer Connections of Central Alabama, or VCCA, along with the Coosa County Extension Office and Coosa County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring this year’s free tax assistance program. This program will entail offering free income tax services to qualifying Coosa County residents.

Certified and trained tax preparers will provide free tax assistance, as well as electronic filing of federal and state income tax forms. This will be available in Rockford every Wednesday beginning February 9 and going through April 6.

During those days the service will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the E-911 building, located at 66 Communication Drive in Rockford.

Individuals with an annual income of $57,000 or less or those who are 60 years and older with any income qualify for filing their taxes through VCCA.

Information that must be brought to the tax site and that is required by the IRS is last year’s tax return; photo ID for taxpayer and spouse; Social Security cards for taxpayers and dependents; W-2s, 1099s B, R, and SSA; and employed taxpayers should bring a copy of their year-end pay stub.

Additionally, those who received a stimulus check should enter that information on the itemized deduction sheet and bring the IRS form 6475 (1444C letter). Those who received advanced child credit should bring IRS form 6419 with them.

Also, those who have health insurance through the government marketplace should bring their 1095-A which the government sends them.

The tax preparers on site must have that information to complete tax returns this year.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments will have priority for this service. Those interested in utilizing this free service are asked to call VCCA in Alexander City at 256-234-0347 to make an appointment for the Rockford location.

Visits will take about 20 minutes each as this is a drop-off service only this year. Individuals will then be called to sign and pick up their completed returns, and once that is completed, their federal and state income tax forms will be electronically filed.

For more information on this tax assistance program, contact VCCA at 256-234-0347 or the Coosa County Extension Office at 256-377-4713.
